Strolling Mummers: Pilgrimage for Peace

In Autumn 2025 a core group of four pilgrims walked a 500-mile pilgrimage from Cornwall to Norfolk, blending walking, performance, and storytelling. Reviving the tradition of travelling players, we toured the traditional mummers play of Saint George and His Many Enemies through pilgrimage. Over 50 days, I and my fellow pilgrims—sourced through a national call-out—walked 10 miles daily, performing our mummers play in each community we encountered.

At its core, this project explored othering, war, and our connection to the land. Mummers plays, rooted in folk traditions, deal with death, rebirth, and transformation—timeless themes that still resonate. By performing in public spaces, pubs, village halls, and schools, we invited communities into a shared experience, reviving a storytelling tradition once carried by foot.

Pilgrimage adds another layer: an act of endurance, ritual, and reflection, engaging with the land as a living archive. Each step explored how we belong to place, each other, and stories.

This project challenges conventional touring by offering a slower, more embodied, sustainable approach. Walking minimises environmental impact while forging direct connections with people and places.
