La Beltane

La Beltane – Sark May Day Celebrations
"There are twelve months in all the year,
As I hear many folks say.
But the merriest month in all the year,
Is the merry month of May!"

Celebrate the coming of summer with us on the island of Sark as we welcome the magical month of May – a time of blossom, bluebells, birdsong, and bees.

La Beltane is a modern reimagining of an ancient Iron Age Celtic festival and stands as the only celebration of its kind in the Channel Islands. Rooted in old traditions and island spirit, it’s quickly become a much-loved fixture in Sark’s cultural calendar. This festival gathers the community to revel in the birth of summer and the natural beauty that surrounds us during springtime.

The daytime festivities resemble a traditional May Day fête, with a blend of folklore and fun designed for all ages. Think maypole dancing, May Queens, well dressing, mummers plays, workshops, craft stalls, and curious things hidden away for you to discover. Entry to the daytime activities is by donation, ensuring the celebration remains open and accessible to all.

As the sun begins to set, the atmosphere shifts. The fire procession begins, culminating in the dramatic burning of a wickerman – a symbolic act of transformation and release. From there, the energy rises into a lively evening of music, dancing, and revelry. The night features a ceilidh followed by a curated mix of live music and performance – an experience that balances tradition with joyful bedlam.

Co-creator Jolie Rose says:
"La Beltane began as a dream – to create a festival that felt both ancient and alive, deeply rooted in ritual but full of joy and spontaneity. People often say the day feels like a family-friendly fête that slowly transforms into a wild, celebratory festival. The hope is that in years to come, visitors will assume this has always been part of Sark’s story."

Whether you're here for the springtime magic, the firelight spectacle, or the nighttime dancing under the stars – La Beltane invites you to mark the turning of the seasons with community, creativity, and celebration.
